Founded in 2000, Macau University of Science and Technology (M.U.S.T.) has rapidly developed into the largest multi-disciplinary university in Macau and is also ranked as the youngest university among the Top 50 Universities in the Greater China1. Faculties and Programs

       Macau SAR government has authorized award academic degrees at doctoral, master and bachelor levels; to cater to different interests from different people, M.U.S.T. offers approximately ten programs that are conducted mainly in English, with some conducted either in Chinese, Portuguese or Spanish. In addition to local students, M.U.S.T. attracts students from Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and rest of the world. Currently, there are approximately 11,000 students studying at the University, including approximately 3,200 master and doctoral students and 7,700 undergraduate students2.The faculties/departments at M.U.S.T. include the School of Business, Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Management, Faculty of Humanities and Arts, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Information Technology, Faculty of Chinese Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, School of Pharmacy, University International College and the Department of General Education which provide a wide range of courses such as social sciences, science, law, management, business, medicine, pharmacy, art, communications and language. Moreover, The School of Continuing Studies provides learning opportunities for adult learners.
       Currently, the employability and the opportunity to further studies of our graduates are highly satisfying. Number of graduates have received scholarships from world renowned universities and continue further studies abroad. While majority of our graduates is working for the government and other well-known enterprises in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau.

Faculty members and Research Development

      The key to excellent education and extraordinary research is to have a knowledgeable, professional experienced and internationalized faculty team. M.U.S.T. has hundreds chair professors, professors, visiting professors, associate professors and assistant professors. The majority of the academic and research staff have obtained PhD degrees and have worked or studied in world-renowned institutions and universities. In addition, M.U.S.T. has invited a group of world class specialists and experts to teach undergraduates and postgraduates. These specialists include academicians from Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chinese Academy of Engineering, Academia Sinica in Taiwan, United States National Academy of Sciences, Highly Cited scholars and other top scholars. These outstanding scholars are teaching our undergraduates and supervise postgraduates, imparting newest knowledge and disseminating latest research findings, which would widen the horizons of the students.
       Academic freedom has always been the pursuit of the University. M.U.S.T. supports academic staff and researchers to develop diverse research projects, encouraging them to collaborate and produce new knowledge, new technology and new products so as to advance diversified academic development and to provide services for Macau’s development and development of the country. M.U.S.T. focus on places emphasis on development of characteristics and advantageous research areas, for example, quality and innovative drugs in Chinese medicine, data analysis of Chang’e satellite and lunar and planetary sciences, system engineering, smart city, architecture and city planning, human resources management and gaming tourism management, Macao society and culture, comparative studies of cross-regional laws in the cross-strait region, art design, Macau media studies, etc. M.U.S.T. encourages the faculty to publish high quality research outcomes. In recent years, our research publications at the Q1 zone of international SCI/SSCI academic journals have doubled, and the number of national and international patents granted has increased several times.
       After years development, M.U.S.T. now owns a number of prominent institutes and research centers, including the Institution for Sustainable Development, the Space Science Institute, the Partner Laboratory of the Key Laboratory of Lunar and Deep Space Exploration, Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Institute for Social and Cultural Research, the State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine, Macau Institute of Systems Engineering, Macau Research Center for International Standard of Chinese Medicines, Research Centre on Arbitration & Alternative Dispute Resolution, Macau Media Research Center, Macau Environmental Research Institute, Macau Financial Innovation Research Center, and Macau Academy of Cinematic Arts. In 2016, the University has established Smart City Institute and Macau’s first Nobel Prize Winner Laboratory “Biophysical Laboratory for Chinese Medicine”. These institutes and laboratories perform the functions of teaching and research simultaneously, not only providing practical training opportunities for outstanding research talents but also making great contributions to the studies on the sustainable development of Macau and the adequate diversification of Macau’s economy.


Campus Life and Facilities

       For campus facilities, M.U.S.T. has a beautiful campus, and several modern teaching buildings, well-established laboratories and rich collections in the library. M.U.S.T. advocates a harmonious, professional and caring campus which educates students with all-round development of their character. M.U.S.T. has set up the Mentor scheme to assist students in coping with problems in their studies and life. By holding many forms of student society activities, M.U.S.T. encourages students to actively participate in extra-curricular activities so as to develop their organizational skills, improve their social and cognitive abilities and broaden their knowledge spans. M.U.S.T. provides a diversity of facilities for students to engage in different kinds of colorful extra-curricular activities, for example, the establishment of a student center with multiple piano rooms, rehearsal rooms, multi-functional rooms, and other rooms that are open for students to use for free all year round. The Art Troupe offers students a stage to show their artistic talent. The Art Troupe has also become brand in art and culture of the University. The Center for Entrepreneurship and Career Planning helps students finding their personal strengths and expertise to excavate their own potential, establish a healthy, upright core value system in terms of career development, and enhance their competitiveness as well as planning and preparation to enter the labor market or entrepreneurship. The Student Affairs Office organizes visits, field trips and community activities for students. The University also encourages students to participate actively in various professional competitions locally and abroad. Based on students’ interests, the Student Affairs Office coordinates all kinds of training to students and provides them with guidance and counseling services.
       There are convenience stores, bank centers, student restaurant, teaching restaurant, coffee corner, computer store, physical development center, an Olympic-standard track and field stadium and gymnasium, indoor stadium and tennis court facilities in the campus, providing conveniences for students to exercise and satisfy all their living needs. The University Hospital is located in the campus providing 24-hour support and handles emergencies for students and staff. The hospital is equipped with advanced equipment, in addition to a local professional medical team, there is also a specialist team of well-known specialists from Mainland China, Hong Kong and other countries. Moreover, the University is equipped with 24-hour security patrol in the campus and dormitories to protect the orderly campus environment.
       The University owns five dormitory providing better work, study, and living environment for teachers and students. The newly built Block O teaching complex has been put in use. This new building has provided large number of classrooms, staff offices and teaching facilities. These facilities will enhance the teaching environment in the University.

Academic Exchange and International Cooperation

       Internationalization has been an important momentum of M.U.S.T.’s development. It is also an important direction for M.U.S.T.’s future development. In terms of academic administration, M.U.S.T. integrates the experience of world-renowned universities with specific Macau-related local, social and cultural characteristics, and has established its own administrative principles and culture, management structure and system, administrative mechanisms and procedures that fit well with M.U.S.T.’s goal of becoming an internationalized university that’s equipped with internationally advanced world-level management. At present, M.U.S.T. has established many types of cooperation partnerships with more than one hundred institutions in Europe, America and Australia, mainland China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, in educational programs, academic research, personnel training, student exchanges and other areas. It is also a member of the Association of Universities of Asia and the Pacific (AUAP) and the International Association of Universities (IAU). M.U.S.T. supports students to engage in overseas exchange programs and provides long-term, mid-term, short-term funding for outstanding students to study abroad. It also gives support to students to pursue further overseas studies or overseas employment in various ways, including through recommendations etc.


       In the future, M.U.S.T. will continue endeavors to teaching and research, attract talents from all fields, hold tight to the two key elements: “quality” and “innovation”, to give full play to the advantage of a non-profit private university. The State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine  (Macau University of Science and Technology)

       The State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine (Macau University of Science and Technology) was approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology and formally established on January 25, 2011. So far, it is the only state key laboratory in the field of Chinese medicine. In January 2014, it passed the inspection stage for the constructional phase (3 years). In July 2017, it passed the first inspection stage for the developmental phase (3 years) and obtained a unanimous praise from the expert delegations.


       The establishment of the State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine is an important measure for the central government to promote the international development of Chinese medicine, and to advance the moderate diversification of economic development and technological upgrading in Macao. The laboratory aims become a research base with advanced international standards in Chinese medicine quality control and innovative drugs, obtain first-hand innovation research achievements and independent intellectual property ownerships, bring together and cultivate talents in Chinese medicine and to develop international high-level academic exchanges and cooperation, focus on integrating cutting-edge multidisciplinary technologies, establish open style scientific and technological platforms catered for the study of quality Chinese medicine and innovative drugs quality research carry out in-depth explorative, innovative and major key technological research.

       There are more than 300 researchers and postgraduates in the laboratory, of whom 51 hold the positions as Assistant Professors or above, including Nobel laureates, academicians of the American Academy of Sciences, academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, Chair Professors, Professors, Distinguished Professors, Associate Professors and Assistant Professors and so on. Researchers who hold the positions as assistant professors or above are from well-known teaching and research institutions at local and abroad and are fluent English and Chinese bilinguals who possess prolific research experiences and international perspectives, forming a multi-disciplined, well-structured, and strong research team that integrates talents from a variety of related fields such as chemistry, biology and pharmacology.
       The State Key Laboratory pays special attention to the integration and merging of the most cutting-edge technologies in multidisciplinary areas, focusing on 2 research directions; the innovative technologies and methods for quality controls and optimization of herbal medicines and Chinese medicine compunds, as well as the key techniques and quality standards for the development of high quality new Chinese medicinal drugs. The four areas of research fields focused on are;

(1)Technological innovations and basic research based on the complex characteristics of traditional Chinese medicines,
(2)Preclinical and clinical study of high-value Chinese medicinal herbals,
(3)Standardization and application of anti-cancer and anti-immune Chinese medicines,
(4)Development and quality control of novel Chinese medicines against neurodegenerative and metabolic disorders.

Specific research directions include:
       Discovery of new pharmacological effects in TCM, anti-influenza studies in Chinese herbal compounds’ superiority, multi-target Ireatment mechanism on diabetes and anti-inflammatory diseases, and to develop innovative research methods based on complex characteristics of TCM through the new perspectives of efflux transporter, mitochondrial division and interaction with intestinal microflora;
       Combinational quality assessment methods based on pharmacodynamics-pharmacokinetics-mass spectrometry, pharmacological effects of ginsenosides on intestinal microflora and prevention of ischemic heart disease, anti-cancer effects and mechanisms of novel ginsenosides, quality control evaluation of ginseng and other valuable herbal medicines with omics technology;
       The discovery of new diagnostic markers and applied research in autoimmune diseases by new techniques such as glycolipidomics, screening of small molecules with anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory activities by molecular computational docking, new mechanism of anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory therapy, new animal models in anti-inflammatory immunity and research methods based on omics technology;
       Identifying active components in Chinese medicine against brain degeneration, synthesizing anti-neuro-degenerative active small molecular compounds, investigation of effect of pathogenic mutation of prion on its folding and aggregation mechanism, the binding site of TCM small molecules in islet amyloid protein;and biophysical research in Chinese medicine.


The laboratory has made some important scientific discoveries in the above-mentioned key areas, including: 
discovering a series of traditional Chinese medicine ingredients with novel structure and significant treatment efficacy;
discovering the new activity and mechanism of various Chinese herbal ingredients;
establishing a research platform based on innovative omics technology (proteomics, lipidomics, glycomics) to systematically reveal the target network of traditional Chinese medicine;
discovering new anti-tumor drug resistance mechanism, a new anti-inflammatory target and a new oncogene;
established a quality evaluation method based on multivariate analysis techniques, a more comprehensive and effective assessment of authenticity and quality of herbal medicines. Related research results have been published in mainstream academic journals such as Science, Nature, Nature Methods, Anals of Rheumatic Diseases, Analytical Chemistry, Organic Letters, Cell Death and Disease,etc;

       In addition, one researcher was selected as the Chang-Jiang Scholar Chair Professor by the State Ministry of Education of PRC in 2014. Another researcher was granted the National Natural Science Foundation of China - Overseas and Hong Kong- Macao Scholar Collaborative Research Fund.
       In recent years, the State key laboratory has been actively conducting exchanges and cooperation events, and has established joint laboratories or research centers with 17 well-known teaching and research institutions, regularly co organizing academic conferences and seminars with the Macao Science and Technology Development Fund and “Cross-Strait Scientific Collaboration Center for Chinese Medicine”. The laboratory is also committed in promoting the international standardization of Chinese medicine and expanding the development of high-technological services with the founding of“Macau Centre for International Standard of Chinese Medicines”, it promotes the establishment of international standards for Chinese medicine, and be responsible for the operation of the Chinese Herbal Medicine Working Group (WG1) of the Chinese Medicine Technical Committee (TC249) within the International Standard Organization (ISO); The laboratory has obtained Australian NATA/ISO17025 certification, which can provide testing services in Chinese medicine and food products that conform to international ISO standards for scientific research institutions and enterprises across the cross strait.

“Dr. Neher’s Biophysics Laboratory for Chinese Medicine” a Nobel laureate workstation has also been established.
       The laboratory is equipped with a series of advanced, sophisticated, high-end laboratory equipment and processing systems, including all types of liquid/mass spectrometry and gas/mass spectrometers nearly 30 sets, and a series of the most advanced chemical analysis and systems biology techniques research equipment required for the evaluation of the overall animal-cell-molecule drug biological activity, such as LC-SPE-NMR (600 MHz) (Bruker), PacBio Third generation sequencer, Computer-aided drug design for large-scale computer clusters, Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometer,2D nano-LC-MADLI TOF-TOF System (Bruker), Agilent 1290 UHPLC with 6490 Triple QuadrupoleMS System, Agilent 1290 UHPLC with 6460 Triple Quadrupole MS System, Agilent 1290 UHPLC with 6550 TOF MS System, Agilent 1290 UHPLC with 6230 TOF MS System, Agilent 2D-LC Chip with 6460 Triple Quadrupole System, DeltaVision Live-Cell Imaging System, BD FACSAriaIIIFlow Cytometer, GE Healthcare DIGE System etc, the total value of equipment exceeds 250 million Patacas.

State Key Laboratory of Lunar and Planetary Sciences (Macau University of Science and Technology)

       The State Key Laboratory of Lunar and Planetary Sciences (hereafter referred to as SKLplanets) (Macau University of Science and Technology) was approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China and established on October 8th, 2018. It is the first state key laboratory in the field of astronomy and planetary sciences. The establishment of SKLplanets marks an important step of developing deep-space exploration, improving scientific and technological level in Macao, and promoting scientific and technological innovation of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) started to participate in China Lunar Exploration Project in 2005, involving data analysis and scientific research, and the Space Science Institute was built up in the end of 2011. In April 2014, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) officially approved the establishment of Lunar and Planetary Science Laboratory in MUST as a co-laboratory of CAS Key Laboratory of Lunar and Deep Space Exploration. The co-laboratory of CAS Key Laboratory of Lunar and Deep Space Exploration was established on November 19th, 2014 and Dean Chunli Bai of CAS personally visited Macao to host the opening ceremony.


       There are around 100 researchers and postgraduate students in SKLplanets, with 40 researchers including fellows of the US National Academy of Sciences, foreign associates of the US National Academy of Engineering, fellows of the CAS, fellows of International Academy of Astronautics, Academia Sinica Members, Chair Professors, Professors, Distinguished Guest Professors, Associate Professors, and Assistant Professors. This research team possesses reasonable structure of discipline and echelon, as well as strong research strength, which can be regarded as a core team in scientific application researches of deep space exploration. The SKLplanets director is Chair Professor Keke Zhang. The director of the SKLplanets academic committee is Academician Ziyuan Ouyang (Institute of Geochemistry, CAS) and the deputy director of the SKLplanets academic committee is Academician Yongxin Pan (Institute of Geology and Geophysics, CAS).
       Overall objective of SKLplanets: constructing a research center on planetary sciences with international influence, building an international academic exchange and cooperation center with high standards regarding to planetary sciences, participating in major projects of China’s deep space exploration, offering required scientific supports, training high-quality talents in planetary sciences, and making a research team with internationally competitive standards.
       The SKLplanets research subjects mainly involve planetary physics, planetary geology and planetary chemistry. The research directions contain planetary internal structures, planetary internal dynamics, planetary surface physics, planetary topography, magnetic field and gravity field physics of planets, planetary meteorite chemistry, as well as planetary formation and evolution. Focusing on the moon, Mars, near-Earth small bodies and gaseous giant planets, the main research content is using numerical simulation, data analysis, high-resolution observation, experimental research and other means to investigate the internal structure and gravity field of planets, the dynamics of internal fluid or magnetic fluid in planets, impact craters, planetary topography, physical characteristics of planetary surface, atmospheric dynamics on planets, interplanetary space plasma, sampling/meteorite analysis.


       Currently, there are five centers in the SKLplanets, namely, Center for Sample Analysis, Center for Small Celestial Body, Center for Planetary Environment Simulation and Internal Dynamics, Supercomputing Center, and Science Communication Center. The SKLplanets also joins hands with the leading institutes in Guangdong and Hong Kong to establish the Center for Earth and Planetary Sciences in the Greater Bay Area.
       Along with China’s strategy for deep space exploration, the SKLplanets has been performing various researches and achieved critical results. Among them, the shallow structure of the Chang’E 3 landing area was analyzed for the first time and the unique geological features were found in the patrol area. This work was published in the journal of Science, which was the first Science paper for Chang’E Missions. The logically consistent, physically correct and mathematically rigorous circulation model and inversion method were developed for Jupiter, and two possible structures of Jupiter’s circulation patterns were proposed based on the Juno gravity field data. The new type of volcanic geomorphology, the negative topographic circumferential dome, was recognized for the first time in the world. The work was selected as one of the Highlight papers by the American Geophysical Union (AGU) and was reported in detail in one of its journals. Relevant findings have been published in the renowned journals including Science, PNAS, Annual Review of Earth and Planetary Sciences, Geophysical Research Letters, Earth and Planetary Science Letters, and Scientific Reports. In 2012, the project titled "Analysis and Research of Data on Chang'E Moon Landing Mission" won the third prize of the science and technology award in Macao. In June 2016, the other project named “Scientific Discovery of Data on Chang'E Multi-Band Moon Landing Mission" won the first prize of the science and technology award in Macao. 


       The SKLplanets has co-hosted “International Symposium on Lunar and Planetary Sciences” with China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) every two years, gathering well-known scholars from all over the world in Macao since 2014. The SKLplanets has also held “Symposium on Payload Technologies and Data Processing of China’s First Mars Exploration Mission” every year since 2017, promoting further exchanges between scientists and engineering designers. The SKLplanets carries out popular science promotion activities to Macao citizens, including guiding students with potentiality for science frontier practices, implementing “Science Golden Seed Scheme” for cultivate prospective young scientific talents, and promoting popular science activities into local middle schools. The annual summer camp on space sciences and astronomical observation activities attract attentions and supports from a large number of teenagers and Macao citizens.
